My disappointment in Movie!Hermione comes from the fact that Jo literally handed the film writers a wonderfully written, multi-faceted, and incredibly interesting character on a silver platter and they completely rebuffed her. Hermione in the books is bossy, she nit-picks, she’s protective, she’s studious to the point of being obsessive, she is spiteful, she is sneaky, and she is terrified of rejection. Hermione in the films is basically supergirl who skates by on other character’s lines and is portrayed as the sole reason Harry made it to the end (“We wouldn’t last two days without her”. Awesome, except I was under the impression it was literally a group effort, not just Hermione carrying all the weight around on her super muscly Schwarzenegger shoulders.) They took her and polished her until she was nearly unrecognizable to me. Except they didn’t need to! Hermione was already great the way she was written! Give me tattletale Hermione who gets Harry’s Firebolt confiscated because she’s worried it could be dangerous. Give me activist Hermione who starts S.P.E.W because she has a saviour complex. Give me underhanded Hermione who bewitches a piece of parchment to permanently scar anyone who snitches about the DA. Give me trembling Hermione who sits in Ron’s room and cries while explaining she modified her parents’ memories and may never see them again. Because THAT Hermione-that Hermione is important. Because she was proof you can be flawed and still be considered valuable and a good person who deserves the world. And I don’t get that from the Hermione in the films. At all.
This is the dub and then sub of the notorious scene where Takeru/TK beats the ever-loving shit out of the Kaiser. As a linguist/English-native-Japanese-second-language-speaker I have wanted to do this analysis FOREVER.
I’ll try to keep it short. The major difference? In English Takeru comes off much more like a little shit than he does in Japanese. This isn’t because the dialogue was extensively changed or anything (it was but it wasn’t). It fits the exact same feeling the original Japanese has. The difference is how culturally we interpret the tone.
In English, patronizing is always bad. It is not considered a good tactic to use against a person. Takeru uses it in spades here, and so we see him as a little shit. (Short analysis because cuts apparently aren’t possible today)
In Japanese, however, patronizing is considerably different. I have been on the receiving end of this and let me tell you it is terrifying. Here’s how it works, and it’s complicated. Patronizing is an effective scolding (?) tactic in Japanese from a person of higher power to a person of lower power. What it does is reinforces the lower person’s status as, well, low, and causes great shame. I’m telling you from experience that this is absolutely true.
However, here’s the thing here. There is kind of some ambiguity over who has more power here. Let’s break it down. Ken is older than Takeru, and perceives himself to be the Kaiser. However, Takeru has more experience in the Digital World and is the one who starts the argument. But basically, Ken is insulted because he is totally convinced he is the one of higher rank (hence striking out with the whip—in English this comes off as petulant; in Japanese it is a power play. That Takeru just lets it hit him shows that he is aware of the Kaiser’s attempt at power play and doesn’t give a fuck).
One last thing because this is getting long. Takeru’s speech. There isn’t a way for it to translate over and so the first time I watched the sub it didn’t really hit me like it did the second time. Pragmatically (ways that are totally outside of language itself; this is things like sarcasm etc) his speech is totally different from normal. It’s what makes him super patronizing but it’s also… hmmm. It reminds me of the adrenaline-rush of a panic attack (which to be fair he might be having at this point). One important feature of this is he uses some contractions/slurring of syllables. Takeru never really does this normally—he always speaks clearly and in standard Japanese. Example is “Stop acting like a child”: Standard Japanese that Takeru would normally say is “otona ni naranai to” - what he says is “otona ni nannai to”. It’s a common thing but Takeru doesn’t really do it. He also uses interjections like “sa” after phrases that he usually wouldn’t. BUT YOU KNOW WHO DOES? YOU KNOW WHO DOES THESE THINGS ALL THE MOTHERFUCKING TIME BECAUSE HE IS A LITTLE SHIT? YAMATO. So my theory is Takeru is channeling his brother here a little bit.
